"Afghani singer killed on street after Vancouver concert"
David Carrigg, The Province, Monday, May 09, 2005
The Province published news article
An internationally renowned Afghani singer died yesterday several hours after being assaulted outside his Vancouver hotel.
Nasrat Parsa had performed a Mother's Day concert Saturday night at Vancouver's Queen Elizabeth Theatre.
"I heard from a customer that the singer from last night had died," said Rabia Nayebzadah, whose family business had sold several of the tickets for the Nasrat Parsa concert. "I didn't believe it so my dad made a call to a friend and was told the singer was killed."
Vancouver police did not return The Province's calls yesterday.
However, a source said a man died in southeast Vancouver after being assaulted.
Rabia's father, Mohamad Nayebzadah, said his business, Silk Road Cafe, catered for the concert. "It went until midnight and then we closed and came home. When I came to work today we heard that he had died. We are very, very upset. This is a very good man and a very good singer. We can't believe it."
The concert promoter, Abdul Ghani Sana, refused to comment, saying the incident occurred after the concert.
According to the biography on Parsa's website, he was born in Kabul, Afghanistan "on what my mother described to be a calm, peaceful and sunny day."
Parsa has performed all over the world, including Australia, Frankfurt, Germany, Holland and England.
He recorded 10 albums and was hugely popular among young Afghanis.
Najeeb Parsa, Nasrat's older brother and mentor, told BCTV News on Global that his brother was approached by two fans on the steps outside the Days Inn, on the 2000-block of Kingsway.
He said the men initially asked for an autograph, before one of the men struck his brother on the side of the head. Nasrat Parsa fell to the ground and struck his head on one of the stairs.
He was rushed to Vancouver General Hospital but died later in the morning.
People at the scene detained the two men who had approached Parsa. It is believed the men are being held in custody.
Parsa performed in Toronto last month.
