Born on January 7 th 1980 to Dr. Abdul Latif Jalali and Rahela Jalali, Mustafa Jalali found a genuine interest in music in early stages of childhood. Dr. Abdul Latif Jalali was the director-general for Radio Afghanistan and graduated from Kabul University in Law and Political Science. An established professional in his field, Dr. Jalali has been recorded in the “Who is Who of Afghanist” by American writer Ludwic Adamac. His mother, Rahela Jalali was teacher at Lace Share Shawie Soori in Kabul . The youngest amongst five siblings in a household with strong educational upbringing, Mustafa initially found music as a leisure activity.

Witnessing performances in Radio Afghanistan by legendary musicians like Ustad Kial, Ustad Zaland, Ustad Mawash, Nai Nawaz, the great trumpet player Nagiali, Tabla Ustad Hashim, Ustad Asif, Ustad Aref, Ustad Wali, other great singers such as Ustad Nashenas, Ustad Natu, Ustad Rahim Bakhsh, Ustad Yosef Qasimi brought Mustafa closer to music. His childhood was spent in Afghanistan until the age of eleven, at which time, he moved with his family to India . Here Mustafa attended Mumbai Academy of Music, a small private school where classical and light instrumental Indian music such as the sitar, tabla, harmonium, and tamboor were introduced. By this time his interest had ignited from a pastime to a passion. His stay in India was only nine months; therefore his advantage of such instruments was limited at which time he moved to the United States in the early 90's.
